Dryers

Hi, I’m Andy Shu, an HVAC and appliance repair expert at ZapFixers, and I’ve encountered countless dryers with heating issues. If your dryer isn’t heating up, it can be frustrating, but don’t worry! I’ll guide you through the most common causes and solutions to help get your dryer back in working order.

Why Your Dryer Isn’t Heating

There are several reasons why your dryer might not be heating, ranging from simple fixes to more complex problems. Here are the most common causes:

  1. Blown Thermal Fuse The thermal fuse is a safety feature that prevents your dryer from overheating. If it blows, the dryer won’t produce heat. This is one of the most common issues I see in non-heating dryers. Solution: You’ll need to test the thermal fuse with a multimeter to see if it has continuity. If the fuse is blown, it must be replaced. Remember, if the thermal fuse blew, it’s essential to check for airflow issues like clogged vents, as this could have caused the overheating.
  2. Faulty Heating Element If the thermal fuse is intact, the next likely culprit is the heating element itself. A broken or burned-out heating element won’t be able to heat the air passing through your dryer. Solution: The heating element can be tested with a multimeter. If it’s faulty, you’ll need to replace it. This requires removing the back panel of the dryer, so be sure to disconnect the power before you start.
  3. Defective Thermostat A defective high-limit thermostat can also cause your dryer to stop heating. This component monitors the dryer’s temperature and prevents it from overheating, but if it fails, it may prevent the dryer from reaching the right temperature. Solution: Test the thermostat with a multimeter. If it doesn’t have continuity, it needs to be replaced.
  4. Burned-Out Igniter (For Gas Dryers) If you have a gas dryer, a malfunctioning igniter might be the reason it’s not heating. The igniter is responsible for lighting the gas that creates the heat in your dryer. Solution: The igniter should glow bright orange when functioning correctly. If it doesn’t glow or if it’s cracked, it will need to be replaced.
  5. Clogged Dryer Vent Poor airflow due to a clogged vent can cause your dryer to overheat and shut off the heat as a safety measure. This is often the case if the dryer takes longer than usual to dry clothes before it stops heating altogether. Solution: Cleaning the dryer vent is a relatively easy fix but crucial for both the performance and safety of your dryer. I recommend doing this at least once a year to prevent future problems.
  6. Tripped Circuit Breaker (For Electric Dryers) Electric dryers require two 120V circuits to operate. If one of these circuits trips, the dryer may still run, but it won’t produce heat. Solution: Check your home’s breaker panel to see if a circuit has tripped. Resetting the breaker might solve the issue.
